Learn about Yolŋu homeland life as you join a 4WD adventure to Bawaka, 60km south of an Aboriginal community of Yirrkala. This tour has departures available from Nhulunbuy or Yirrkala.
Gain insight on Yolŋu homeland life! Participate in traditional spear fishing and crab hunting in this Bawaka adventure. Have the opportunity to learn about Moiety – Yirratja and Dhuwa (Kinship) and how this connects us to the land and to each other. With this tour, you can hear about the seven seasons and see what the environment is telling you.
You will be picked up from Nhulunbuy or Yirrkala in 4WD vehicle at 08:00. Your Yolŋu driver-guide will take you on a journey to one of the region's many Yolŋu homelands. You will then be Welcomed to Yolŋu Country upon your arrival—a form of blessing for you to be on the country and to keep you safe. Your guide will give you knowledge on how Yolŋu gathered bush foods, as well as their traditional remedies or craft materials depending on the seasons and the make up of the group.
As a part of your tour, a picnic lunch will be provided and may be supplemented by seafood gathered on the day. Your guide can take you on foot or in vehicle to explore the area, allowing you to have many photo opportunities! At 16:00, you will make your return trip to Nhulunbuy.
The tour is on a request basis with a duration of 8 hours. The tour is subject to a minimum capacity of 4 people and a maximum capacity of 10 people. Larger groups can be catered upon request.
The tour price is $450 per person. A family package is available for $1260—good for two adults and 2 children.
